Artifice - 2006
Artifice presents photographic works that explore the formal and conceptual possibilities of photography through images of simulated flowers, artificial foliage, and fabricated sunsets. Created with a custom-built digital scanner-camera—combining modern technology with 19th-century photographic methods—the works produce high-resolution, hyper-real images with a pre-Raphaelite sensibility.
This alternative scanner-camera approach challenges conventional relationships between time, colour, motion, and imaging. From a distance, the large, saturated images appear painterly and hyper-real, but closer viewing reveals digital streaks and pixelated blurs caused by motion. These visible artifacts disrupt any romantic reading, creating a tension between painterly aesthetics and technological imprint that prompts viewers to reconsider blur, distortion, and information loss in digital photography.
