Arnold Koroshegyi A Collected Surface - 2023 - ongoing
“A Collected Surface” examines the material afterlife of photographic images depicting unknown scientific prototypes. The project is based on the repeated re-photographing of fragile, deteriorating found images, documenting their surfaces at successive stages of decay. These images are composited and digitally processed, incorporating artificial intelligence tools to reconstruct missing, damaged, or erased areas while preserving visible traces of material loss.
Focusing on visual deterioration and obsolescence, the work treats these images as residual evidence of abandoned scientific inquiry, personal invention, and improvised technological experimentation. Through re-photography, compositing, and algorithmic reconstruction, the project investigates how processes of repair, degradation, and mediation alter photographic meaning. By intentionally destabilizing pictorial clarity, “A Collected Surface” reframes decay as both a material condition and a generative site for reinterpretation, situating the work at the intersection of photography, technological mediation, and archival studies.
